For Strive Masiyiwa’s refusal to allegedly give a bribe of $9million demanded by ex-Governor Ibori, Econet Nigeria dream was killed. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has so far registered 1.5 million candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said this on Saturday during pre-JAMB mock examinations. Africa Rejects Europe's 'dirty Diesel' (photo)

Governments in West Africa are taking action to stop the import of fuel with dangerously high levels of sulfur and other toxins. Much of the so-called "dirty diesel" originates in Europe, according to a report published by Public Eye, a Swiss NGO, last year. The report exposed what Public Eye calls the "illegitimate business" of European oil companies and commodities traders selling low quality fuel to Africa. While European standards prohibit the use of diesel with a sulfur content higher than 10 parts per million (ppm), diesel with as much as 3,000 ppm is regularly exported to Africa. From July 1, diesel being sold at the pumps in Ghana and Nigeria will have to meet a maximum 50 ppm standard. "We're very happy to see this change in policy," Public Eye's Oliver Classen told DW. University Of Portharcourt has won 150 medals comprising 70 gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze to emerge overall winners of the 25th Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games. Security of Rivers Waterways: Governor Wike donates Eight Gunboats to the Nigerian Navy In furtherance of the state's investment in the security of lives on her waterways, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Friday  donated eight security  Gunboats to the Nigerian Navy. Governor Wike  also announced the further acquisition  of 13 Special Boats to be distributed to the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police for enhanced maritime security. Posthumous Award For The Dog That Foiled Boko Haram Suicide Bombing In Borno

The dog that foiled mass killing by a female suicide bomber in Borno recently, will be bestowed with posthumous award by the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, NVMA. Dr. Godwin Abonyi, President of the association, who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja, said that the dog would be awarded on the World Veterinary Day, WVD, tomorrow. Recall that the suicide bomber had, on April 2, attempted to enter into a wedding ceremony ground in Belbelu community, Jere Local Government Area, to detonate a bomb, but was attacked by the dog. Dr. Abonyi described the dog, owned by Mr. Mallum, a school teacher, as gallant for dying in the course of saving the lives of a large number of Nigerians from a suicide bomber.

Nigerian Navy To Use 'made In Aba' Shoes, Uniforms (photos)

The Nigerian navy has indicated interest in patronizing 'Made in Aba' products. A deal between the Navy and the Abia state government when the Governor of the state, Okezie Ikpeazu, in the company of the Commissioner for Industry, Chief Henry Ikoh received a high powered delegation from the Chief of Naval Staff, led by Commodore Chris Obinta at the Abia State Governor's Lodge Aba recently. Speaking at the occasion, Ikpeazu expressed his profound appreciation to the Federal Government for supporting and given impetus to the "Made_in_Aba" initiative. Quoting Ikpeazu, "I commend the Nigeria Navy for indicating interest in procuring their wears from our people here in Aba. I must commend the Federal Government for the support given to our Made-in-Aba promotion campaign." A former Director of Direct Labour Agency, Chief Lucky Ayomanor has the allegedly died in the custody of the police in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State. It was gathered that Chief Ayomanor was accosted and searched by the police, who were on a “stop” and “search” duty along Gana road in Sapele.It was alleged that a fully loaded revolver and pump action was discovered in the SUV of Chief Ayomanor after he was searched by the police. U.S. Based Businessman To Set Up $2bn Dollar Modular Refinery In Edo

U.S.-based businessman, Mr Charles Ihaza, says he has acquired about 453.9 hectares of land to establish a modular refinery in Eghudu, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo. Ihaza said this at an Open Forum organised on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposed refinery in Benin. Building Collapses In Lekki, Two Feared Dead (Photo)

2 people have died as an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed on Thursday afternoon at NICON Town Estate, off Admiralty way, in Lekki area of Lagos. It was gathered that the workers were mixing concrete on the site when part of the building collapsed, with people trapped under the debris. Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and other rescue responders are on site trying to rescue those trapped in the debris.
